What could be the reason for the decreased consumption of pickles in India?

“Healthy habits formed in youth make all the difference in the lives of adults.”
ABOUT PROJECT
In the culmination of an extensive research journey, our design project introduces a revolutionary pickle container inspired by traditional jars while integrating modern functionality. Meticulously crafted, this container embodies the essence of historical pickle vessels, coupled with a unique feature allowing users to separate and merge oil as desired. Beyond its practical utility, the design prioritizes aesthetics, seamlessly blending into contemporary homes and serving as a stylish addition to dining spaces. The intentional focus on visibility aims to elevate the allure of pickles, sparking increased consumption. Grounded in insights gleaned from in-depth user research and market analysis, this venture not only revitalizes cultural practices but also aligns with current lifestyle trends, offering a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation in a product designed to enhance the culinary experience.
-
In this project, I played an integral role in designing a product that bridged tradition and modernity. My primary focus was creating a pickle container that was not only functional but also aesthetically suited for contemporary homes. I worked closely with the team to ensure the design incorporated elements that separated oil effectively while honoring the cultural significance of traditional storage methods. Beyond the product, I contributed to developing a sustainable system for material sourcing and production, ensuring that the welfare of artisans remained central to our approach. On the business side, I collaborated in shaping a transparent model that supported fair trade and empowered artisan communities. I also contributed to crafting a customer experience that highlighted the story behind the product, making it meaningful and engaging.
-
Through this project, I learned the importance of understanding user needs and cultural context when designing a product. Collaborating with the team taught me how to balance utility and design aesthetics while staying true to the product's purpose. I gained a deeper appreciation for the complexities of building efficient and sustainable production systems, particularly when working with artisan communities. On the business side, I realized how impactful storytelling can be in creating emotional connections with consumers. The experience also reinforced the value of designing services that preserve cultural heritage while meeting modern expectations.
-
Throughout the project, I encountered several challenging trade-offs. For instance, we had to strike a balance between making the pickle container functional—such as oil separation and ease of use—and maintaining a sleek, modern design. There was also the challenge of scaling production while preserving the authenticity of the handcrafted process. In terms of business strategy, I was involved in navigating the tension between ensuring artisan welfare and maintaining competitive pricing. From a service perspective, we worked to simplify the customer experience without losing the depth of the product’s cultural storytelling. These trade-offs required a collaborative approach and thoughtful decision-making to achieve a cohesive outcome.
-
One of the most significant challenges I faced was ensuring that the pickle container met functional requirements, like being oil-resistant, while still being visually appealing. Working with the team, we brainstormed creative solutions and refined prototypes to meet these goals. Another challenge was streamlining the production system while maintaining sustainability and artisan welfare. I also contributed to tackling business hurdles, such as securing partnerships and addressing funding gaps, while ensuring our pricing model remained accessible. Educating customers about the product’s benefits and its cultural significance was another area where I contributed, helping craft messaging that was both engaging and informative.
-
This project opened up numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. On the product front, I see the potential to explore additional designs that align with modern lifestyles while staying true to cultural roots. The business aspect of the project gave me ideas for expanding into international markets, which could bring this unique blend of tradition and innovation to a global audience. I also realized how technology, such as AR or VR, could elevate the customer experience by showcasing the product’s story and heritage in an interactive way. Moving forward, I’m excited about leveraging these learnings to contribute to similar multidisciplinary projects.
Research
Initial insights were gathered through comprehensive primary and secondary research methods. The exploration commenced with a nuanced examination of diverse pickle varieties in India, delving into their historical roots, health advantages, and pertinent statistics. A thorough investigation encompassed an analysis of prevailing lifestyle trends impacting dietary choices, living habits, interior aesthetics, and the evolving role of technology. Market dynamics were scrutinized, particularly the surge in demand for homemade and chemical-free pickle options. Significantly, user research played a pivotal role, involving shadowing individuals to understand their living spaces, dietary preferences, lifestyle routines, and other contextual nuances, providing invaluable insights into consumer behavior.
